Y Engage with Candidates during the Election

The UK General Election on 4 July is fast approaching.

A great opportunity for local YMCAs to engage with their local candidates on the issues which matter to us most

Over the coming weeks candidates will be looking for opportunities to connect with their local communities. By meeting with your local candidates, you will ensure that the voices of young people and the communities you serve will be heard by them as they look for support. Your involvement can make a significant difference in advocating for the needs and priorities of young people and your local community.

Pre-election guidance

The pre-election period of sensitivity occurs in the weeks leading up to an election or referendum, and the corresponding guidance is designed to aid YMCAs in deciding what activities are and are not appropriate between the announcement of the election and polling day. The Charity Commission states in its guidance that its purpose is to ensure that charities can use their voice effectively at election time, whilst retaining the essential quality of independence.

The pre-election guidance covers the period from the date of the formal announcement of the election (22 May 2024) to polling day (4 July 2024). Read the guidance in full here, which relates to key areas such as policies, publicity and use of facilities.

Local candidate information and engagement tips

YMCA England & Wales Policy Unit has put together data for each YMCA with their local candidates. This Data will continue to be updated during the election as some candidates have currently not been selected.

We have created a guide with tips and tools on how best to engage with your candidates during the election period. We would encourage all YMCAs to carry out some local activity to be known by their candidates before the election takes place.

Hustings guidance

Hustings bring together candidates in a constituency to debate issues important to your local community. Our guidance sets out how to run a hustings event while considering the sensitivities of the election period.

Hustings encourage candidates to discuss issues relevant to young people. In the coming weeks, we will share information on holding hustings. Check with other youth organizations in your area to see if a hustings event is already planned or if you can collaborate to organize one.
