The YMCA Metropolitan Region Trust Fund was established in 1978, initially from funds donated through gifts and legacies, and subsequently increased over the years by further donations and from the interest on invested funds. Trust Board Members seek to keep increasing the investment fund and to utilise its dividends in supporting the work of YMCAs.
If you have some work or plans which could use some additional funding to get it off the ground, the Trust would be interested in hearing from local associations, primarily in the greater London area.
The Trust uses the funds to ‘pump prime’ new youth work initiatives and enable young people to be involved in national and international activities and events. Typically, funding can be up to £20k but grants are usually smaller, and long-term funding is rarely considered.
You will be asked to complete, as fully as possible, and with supporting information, an application form for the Trust Board to consider. Further details or clarification may be sought before the Trustees make a decision.
The trustees meet two to three times per year, please be aware that speedy decisions on funding can be made but are usually reserved until the Board can meet.
Funding Guidance | Funding Application Form
The application form will need to be returned to Neil Sherringham, Secretary to the Trust Fund, at neilsherringham@gmail.com. Neil can also be approached with any queries on funding requests.
Example Project 1

Example Project 2
Financial support to enable young people to attend an international conference.
Operating for over 44 years, the YMCA Met Region Trust Fund invests legacies and donations and from dividends received, contributes to youth work and related initiatives, particularly pump-priming new youth work in the Greater London area. The Trust currently has nearly £1m invested.
We seek new Trustees to serve in considering funding applications from local associations. We meet around three times per year, at lunchtime, at YMCA England and Wales offices near Barbican, or sometimes virtually. Any other business between meetings is conducted by email, there is, therefore, not a massive time commitment.
We seek people (staff/volunteers/trustees) from within the Federation who have a good knowledge/experience of YMCA work locally and ideally regionally/nationally. Further details of the Trust Fund can be found on the Charity Commission website. We have a clear Trustee role description available.
If you are interested in offering your services or have any questions, please contact Neil Sherringham neilsherringham@gmail.com. We ask that you provide a short profile detailing your YMCA involvement, knowledge of the Federation, and any Trustee experience you have.
